The Crocodile Hunter’s Daughter Met Her Fiance The Same Way He Met His Wife

By lheidi - August 03, 2019

We love a good love story. Whenever we see a couple, we want to know how they met, because we’re always sure that there’s going to be a great story behind it. Even if it’s something like, “I was bored on a Friday night and I went on Tinder and then swiped right on Taylor.” It’s still a good story, because there’s still an act of destiny involved. What made them swipe right on Taylor of all people? And Taylor had to have swiped right on them, too. It’s mean to be, even though it’s ultimately the result of an algorithm and loneliness. Somebody call up Nicholas Sparks, because we want that story turned into a romance novel stat.

But while we’re a sucker for a good love story no matter what it is, there are some love stories that are more romantic than others. Case in point, Bindi Irwin.

Like Father, Like Daughter

Steve Irwin, aka the Crocodile Hunter, worked with animals. And now, his daughter, Bindi, and his son, Robert, are continuing his legacy by working with animals as well.

All grown up, Bindi Irwin is now a wildlife expert who works to protect animals, as well as educate people on animals, just like her old man.

But the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree in more ways than one. Bindi is similar to her dad in ways you wouldn’t expect.

Happily Ever After

We remember seeing Bidni as a child on her father’s TV show, or posing for photos with her family.

Now, Bindi is a full on adult, and she just got engaged. Bindi’s long time boyfriend, Chandler, proposed to her and spoiler: She said yes.

“On my birthday I said ‘yes’ and ‘forever’ to the love of my life,” Bindi said when she posted a photo of the engagement on Instagram. But there’s a lot more to their love story.

Meet Cute

Bindi told Australian Women’s Weekly the story of how she met the man who will become her husband.

The couple met each other while Bindi was giving a tour at the Australia Zoo in Queensland. The two had a connection almost immediately.

Their meet cute happened almost six years ago, but they didn’t start dating right away. In fact, their story has very strong parallels to the way Bindi’s parents met each other and starting dating, too.

Long Distance

After Chandler met Bindi on the Australian safari, he had to go back to America where he is from.

But he kept on thinking about Bindi, and wrote to Bindi’s mother, Terri. He asked Terri if he could see her daughter again.

It’s so old fashioned, but honestly, it’s kind of got us swooning. These days, it’s hard to get guys to text you back, not to mention go the extra mile to show how much they like you.

Blast From The Past

The story should have felt familiar to Terri Irwin, because it’s actually how she met her husband, Steve, as well.

Terri and Irwin actually met on the exact same safari that Bindi and Chandler met on. How weird is that? The Love Boat has nothing on that safari.

Their connection was pretty much instant as well. “Right away we were talking about wildlife, and our passions in life and I kept thinking, ‘I wonder if this guy’s married,’” said Terri.

Puppy Love

It turns out that Steve wasn’t married, but he did immediately start talking about his girlfriend.

“He said to me, ‘Would you like to meet my girlfriend, Sue?’  I tried to be cool about it, but I was devastated,” recalls Terri.

“Then he goes, ‘Hey Sue, Suey, come here.’ And his little dog came running around the corner. ‘This is my girlfriend, Sue,’ he said. I thought, ‘Yes!’” That Steve. He’s such a joker! That story could have gone a completely different direction.

Home Sweet Home

Terri and Steve hit it off right away, but their romance didn’t get as strong of a start.

Terri, like Chandler, had to go back to her home in America. Terri was from Oregon, and needed to return. But that didn’t end things.

“He said, ‘We’ll have to keep in touch,’ but then a week went by and he hadn’t called, and two and three,” she recalled. “I thought maybe I misunderstood what I thought the connection was.”

Conjugal Visit

Terri was sad that she didn’t hear from Steve, but one day, completely out of the blue, he got in touch with her.

“I’m coming to Oregon to see you,” Steve told Terri. It was on.

Eventually, Terri and Steve got married and ended up having two children together, and the rest is history, very romantic history. But apparently, falling in love with a visitor from America on that same safari runs in the family.

What A Coincidence

It’s strange that both Bindi and her father fell in love with a visiting American on the same safari.

But it’s a coincidence that isn’t lost on Bindi. “It’s funny how that works,” said Bindi of both romances.

So if you’re looking for love, you don’t need to get on Tinder. All you need to do is book a flight to Australia and then take that safari. There’s probably going to be an Irwin there that you can date.

Topic Of Conversation

Unfortunately, Steve passed away in September of 2006 when a stingray pierced his hear with a barb.

He never got to meet Chandler or hear the amazing story of how Chandler and Bindi met each other.

But Bindi and Terri have thought about what Steve would have said if he were still alive to see the happy couple. “Mum and Robert and I have talked about that a lot. We all think dad would have loved Chandler,” said Bindi.

Life After Death

Bindi has also spoken kind words about her father, showing how much she really loves him.

“Dad was amazing because he left this legacy that people will never forget,” Bindi said.

“He didn’t just say to love the cute and cuddly animals — he tried to get people to understand and respect the animals like crocodiles and snakes and really break down those barriers,” she continued. It’s so sad that he’s not still here with us today.

Touching Tribute

Steve isn’t around to walk Bindi down the aisle when she gets married. But instead, her brother, Robert, will do the honors.

“I think that for me, it’ll be really important that Robert walks me down the aisle,” said Bindi. “That’s something that I really want to do.”

“I’m always so grateful that Robert is there, and he has been such a big part of my life and he’s always stepped up and been the one to give me a hug when I need it and encourage me forward in life,”  she continued.

Happy Family

Bindi thinks her father will be happy with the decision to have her brother walk her down the aisle.

“[H]e will definitely be the one to walk me down the aisle when the time comes, and I think that will make it really special,” Bindi continued. “And I think that’s what dad would have wanted as well.”

It’s touching to know that Bindi plans on honoring her late father on the happiest day of her life.

Daddy's Girl

But as for the traditional father-daughter dance, that honor will go to her mother, Terri.

“I think, if I was going to do a dance, it would be with my mom. My mom and I are so close. She’s my pillar of strength in life and I love her beyond description,” Bindi said.

“So I think, when the time comes, Robert will walk me down the aisle, [Chandler and I] will have our wonderful moment and I’ll have my dance with mom,” she continued. “I think that would be wonderful.”

Love Is In The Air

Chandler and Bindi are very much in love, and their story is so good it belongs in a romance novel.

“Almost 6 years ago we met at Australia Zoo. I immediately fell head over heels for your kind and thoughtful heart that radiates so much light,”Chandler Tweeted about Bindi. “I love you more than anything in this world and I always will. Forever together sounds perfect.”

We wish these two lovebirds all the best on the safari of life.
